“You have WHAT? That can’t be, can it?”
Seriously, “You have WHAT? That can’t be, can it?” is exactly what I said when my husband came home with the craziest diagnosis. 

One day my husband got a check up from the best doctor on Earth and in the course of the exam, he decided to check for heavy metals poisoning. The heavy metal he found in excess was arsenic. 

“Arsenic? Are you Kidding? What? Are we in an old movie here? Who gets arsenic poisoning??” was my reaction. Then I thought, “Oh no. In those old movies it was always that someone was slipping rat poison in the person’s food or drink or something. - I SWEAR I have not been poisoning ANYONE!”
But seriously, that’s when we got a real education on the topic. You would be surprised how many people are exposed to arsenic in the United States. The US government website indicates that at least 2.1 million people have unacceptable levels of arsenic right in their drinking water. So thought the country, we are drinking water that has been contaminated by the land surrounding it.
Arsenic is a naturally occurring substance but you might ask, why is it present in toxic amounts in our drinking water and what does that mean about the foods we grow on these same lands. Well, the answer is in the fertilizers…

According to the State of Minnesota, there are consumer and commercial products on the market with up to 10 times the recommended limits. But how did this happen? From the late 1800’s through to the 1950’s arsenic was considered the most effective pesticide available and was liberally used in lawn care and farming of all sorts. Arsenate pesticides were not officially banned in the United States until the 1980s. And modified arsenic pesticides such as MMA & DMA are still approved for use on some non-food crops. 
The use of arsenic was not limited to pesticides, it was used in nearly everything. Will Allen talks about this in detail in his book, The War On Bugs. “But it is helpful to recount that arsenic was not only a pesticide; it could be found everywhere and in almost everything in the 1800s that was manufactured. More than a hundred products had arsenic as an ingredient, including but not limited to wallpapers, paint, cosmetics, medicines, fruit preserves, candies, bakery goods, cocoa, sweetmeats, tobacco, book coverings, book bindings, lampshades, decorated plates, toy decorations, cardboard boxes, labels, carpets, watercolors, dental fillings, stockings, veils, stuffed animals, and candles… As a result of these sales campaigns, arsenic became the most widely used pesticide from 1880 until the 1950s, greatly outdistancing total DDT usage in the United States.”
So now, today, we are still paying the price for the wreckage of our ancestor’s poor choices. The foods with the most relationship to water seem to be the most dangerous to our health, like rice. 

After the initial shock and panic wore off, we realized that some major changes were in order for the preservation and continuation of good health. First, we wanted to ban anything and everything from our household that could potentially have come in contact with arsenic. Although we do limit our intake of some foods now, we soon realized that total avoidance would leave us with little that we could eat. 
In my training as a Quantum Biofeedback Practitioner we learn to first, remove the obstacle to cure (stop being exposed the thing that is making you sick) and then to support the body to clean up the damage that has been done. So first, we learned the sources of our food and chose carefully to avoid as much heavy metals exposure as possible, limited our intake of certain foods, and then set about designing a daily routine to remove the heavy metals and help us to keep from absorbing any more along the way. It wasn’t very long before my husband’s health was back on track, and best of all, he didn’t have to take any harsh chemicals or risky medicines to do it. The all-natural approach won out.
